Our wooden spoon is used for ANA’s in-flight meals. (Article content) Wooden spoons and knives from Hirose Products (Shimoyamasa, Hirose-cho, Yasugi City), which manufactures and sells bamboo skewers and bamboo straws, have been adopted for in-flight meals on international and domestic flights of All Japan Airways (ANA). The product was evaluated for its high quality and environmentally friendly products that do not use plastic. We supply a four-piece set of spokes, knives, toothpicks, and bamboo paper napkins with spoons and forks in one. The spokes and knives have been manufactured at Hirose Products’ Chinese plant since 2018, and this time, the polishing time has been extended to 90 minutes, about twice as long as before, to make the mouthfeel smoother, and to make it less likely to crack. ANA, which promotes “ESG management” that considers the environment, society, and governance, has been working to reduce the use of single-use plastic products and has been using wood for in-flight meals for some time. When we were looking for a product that was more durable and could be stably supplied, we decided to do a business with Tottori Bank’s business matching support. From mid-July, it switched to mainly routes that offer in-flight meals on domestic flights, and began to be used on some international flights, such as Vancouver and Sydney flights. Hirose Products manufactures bamboo straws and toothbrushes as an alternative to plastic. President Manabu Tetsumoto (41) said, “I would be happy if our belief in environmentally friendly manufacturing reached global companies, and we Thailand contribute to the protection of the global environment together.”
